So you’re planning on purchasing a bed-in-a-box: you’ve got a lot to choose from! The mail-to-your-door mattress craze is the newest way to get the best of the internet delivered to your home. And all the promises: the money-back-guarantees, the free shipping, the speedy delivery, and the trial period!
It wasn’t as thick as I expected.
Let me tell you what I didn’t consider, or for long enough, when I chose a low-cost memory foam mattress online. First of all, I did not consider that it would end up being much thinner than the description I agreed to.
Next, let me help you think this through. You get something in a small box, and once you take it out- there’s no way you’ll fit it in there again, at least without taking it apart. The memory foam in a box market is based on the ability to put something very large into a small space by vacuum sealing it.
I’ve tried vacuum sealing some things, to save space, before.
I don’t know about you, but there’s no bag in the world air-tight enough for me to vacuum seal it. I’ve tried. Maneuvering a 8 ft. long. 75 lb. boxes and bags isn’t my strong suit, either.
My review of the mattress:
First of all, I actually bought a mattress and have not yet spoken to the seller about the discrepancy in the size of it. I’m trying not to focus on that as I give my honest review.
I didn’t pay much for it, about the cost of a regular mattress, less than a good one. It was the best deal for a 12″ mattress, on eBay. :-/
It is a true King Size, our usual sheets fit it well. It also came with a nice cover which is washable and zips on and off. I haven’t unzipped it yet, but I like the color of the cover.
I didn’t have to buy a boxspring, just a platform bed-frame. This was another cost and space-saver.
It doesn’t smell the best, but I distinctly remember all other memory foam mattress toppers and related items smelled the exact same way, so it’s nothing special. My guess is that this is why it has a cover, and I could always add another encasement of some kind.
The box it came in was far larger than what I was expecting. A large man had a hard time carrying it.
It does prevent movement across the bed, like the video where a person jumps with a wine glass balancing on the other side.
In the past, I had a thick cool mattress topper, and I always felt like I was rolling into the middle, or toward my man. At the time of writing this, I’ve only slept with him on it a couple times, but my baby does roll toward me when I’m trying to get up.
Contacting the Seller on eBay
I’ve emailed the seller, awaiting response about what to do. This is usually a toss-up, whether a seller on eBay will respond. Especially since I don’t intend to pay for the return shipping costs, or feel confident in getting it into a box of any ship-able size.
Overall, I don’t have any huge complaints, but I certainly didn’t think about the various negative aspects of having it shipped in its vacuum sealed condition from who-knows-where. I hope you get a chance to think it through and do the proper research about the company you buy it from, if you decide to go this route.
